Saturday marked the first blogger meetup ever for Kris and I. I’ve been blogging with this lovely lady for over six months, and we finally got to meet in person! Of course, most of my online friends are not from Texas, but she is. Her and I both grew up in the same region in Texas called the Rio Grande Valley.

Kris, Shaq (my little brother), and I had such a great time with her family. She has two beautiful children and some awesome parents. Both her mother and father were great company to be around. I could only wish that everyone had such sweet and loving parents as she has. We will have to do this again some time in the future.

In the meantime, there are other bloggers living in Texas whom I want to meet like Kathy and Carla. I’m definately going to call Kathy up some time in the near future. I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. There are other bloggers whom I feel very close to that I’d like to meet such as Anna, Carol, Niki, Aida, Azzie, Az & Afiz, Joyce, John, Mo, and Dayrell.

Isn’t she adorable? She is Shaq’s new kitty that mom brought home from work. She is blind, but she’s got spirit! Shaq named her Aphrodite because he instantly fell in love with her as soon as he saw her. My mom is an animal control officer and tends to want to keep the animals she saves from the streets. Yesterday, she drove home for her lunch break and said, “April, I’ve got a new job for you and Shaq”, and I’m thinkin’ “Oh great, another baby animal…”. I asked her, “What is it this time… a bird?” She opened up the back of her animal control truck where there are several little cubby holes with doors where she puts the animals, and said, “No, it’s a little kitten”.

I was completely flabbergasted! Mom said, “They told me to put her to sleep because she was blind, but there is nothing wrong with her, and I didn’t have the heart to do it… she’s too much of a sweetheart”. Mom couldn’t be more right.

It’s been a while since I actually ended up posting what was on my mind and what exactly I’ve been doing since I have graduated. I’ve been in my hometown of Olmito (Texas); it is directly north of Brownsville. I’ve been thinking a lot about graduate school and what I can do to make a difference this summer. Lately, I have been reading a book called Community Practice: Theories and Skills for Social Workers and I am learning a lot about the different levels of community and how it directly relates to empowering people, specifically the disadvantaged.

Some of what I have read has been extremely disturbing (published in 1997):

The national political landscape has become more conservative. The 1995 congressional elections saw Republicans gain control of both houses of Congress for the first time since 1958, as well as a majority of the governorships up for election and significant gains in state legislatures. [...] Coupled with the increasing conservativism of the voters is the declining rate of voting among the young, minorities, and lower-income citizens [...] If the nation moves to privitization of social services and greater local authority , control, and responsibility, greater community practice knowledge and skills will be required by all social workers.

That was a little too creepy and way on target when it comes to the sentiments of Americans currently. Aside from reading, I have been researching online for a book on how to write grants. I have no experience with writing grant proposals, but that does not mean that I will give up. I figured that what I could do is write at least one good grant proposal this summer for a non-profit for free, that way, I get the practice I need and at the same time will be helping those less fortunate for free.

If I am successful, then I will be able to write grants for Guru. I signed up for Guru a long time ago thanks to Carla’s advice. Today I received an email reminding me that I have some job offers for some grant proposals, but unfortunately, I have never written a grant… so I cannot offer my services. Hopefully, by the end of this summer I will have enough experience in writing grants to get a job at Guru or somewhere for a non-profit in Houston.

As far as life here with my mom and Shaquille is concerned, it’s okay. My ma hasn’t made the time to tutor Shaquille like she should be doing, which really bites the dust. Shaq is improving in his reading and math, but not significantly like I wish he would. I am slowly accepting the fact that Shaq is not much of a scholar like myself. He is smarter than me, no doubt about, but he would rather be watching movies or playing sports. My brother is a jock. I’ll tell you more about it in a couple of days or so, I promise.

White Noise

My rating: 4 out of 5

This movie scared the crap out of me and got me thinking. One night, when I was a kid, I was looking for channels that might pop up in the middle of the night. I did not have cable back then, and I wanted to see if I could somehow tune into other stations in Texas. I proceeded by turning channel after channel to see if I could get a picture, but then I came across channel number 99 and all of the sudden a single person started mumbling about something. I desperately tried to tune into what I could barely understand, but when I did I heard a blood curdling scream of a woman. I totally freaked out and turned off the t.v. Mind you, when I heard all of this it was all white noise.

Star Wars Episode III

My rating: 4 out of 5

Like all of Lucas’s previous Star Wars episodes, this one was epic in scope. As far as the drama is concerned, it was worth watching. The back and forth play between Anakin’s pull towards the dark side was heart wrenching. It is all too sad a story that Anakin is seduced by Darth Sidious, and that Anakin left a loving wife in Padmé.

The only reason I didn’t give this movie a five, was because of the fact that I do not think that Anakin’s actual turn to the dark side of the force was compelling enough. He relinquished himself to Sidious entirely too quickly. Although Lucas did a bad job of Anakin’s complete turn to the dark side, he did not do a bad job when it came to how Anakin reacts as a result of being succumbed to the dark side of the force.

But what really made this movie, to me, was watching Darth Sidious bloom! Ian McDiarmid made this movie.

Fat Albert

My rating: 5 out of 5

I used to watch Fat Albert as a little kid when I grew up. I felt like I could relate to these guys because they were poor, but were able to make the best out of any tough situation. This movie brought back a great amount of nostalgia for me. If you haven’t seen the Fat Albert show, then you wouldn’t know what I’m writing about. If you did watch the show when you were a kid, then when you see it, you will be probably feel the same way. My biased self wants to give this movie a five, and so I shall.

The Ring Two

My rating: 3 out of 5

This was definately better than The Ring. It was sort of a prequel and sequel all at once. I have no idea why people say that the Japanese original “Ringu” is better than this American remake. I have seen Ringu, and it was not that impressive.

Of course, this movie is not necessarily the best movie in the world, but it is better than House of Wax. Go to your nearest movie rental store and rent this movie. This flick had me jump once, and that’s a lot from someone who rarely jumps at horror films.

Our family had such a great time at the zoo. As you can see here, we are observing a native animal in the central plains of the United States, a prairie dog. Ya’ll know he eats good… I mean, just look at him!

Besides the zoo, we also went to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Galleria (a mall). You can see all the other photos of our vacation by simply clicking on this picture. I took over 200 photos, but I only put up a few.

This was our first true family vacation that I have had with my mother, brother and Kris. We usually do not get out much because of the fact that there are so many animals that ma takes care of, that she usually worries about them too much to get motivated enough to leave. Heh, but there was no way she was going to miss my graduation.
