Last week, I discovered that the position I’ve wanted for some time now had opened up. What the position is, is a graduate assistant position at the Women’s Resource Center here on campus, where I would be working side by side with the director of the Women’s Resource Center. There is only one position available (period) and I want it so badly. I have never worked in a non-profit setting, and this could be my first opportunity to network and get the skills I need to succeed as a future social worker.

In a way, this would almost be like working an internship, but getting paid ten dollars an hour for it. And right now, not only do Kris and I need the money desperately, but more importantly, I would work with a highly accomplished woman who is awesome at what she does. She basically networks within and outside of the University of Houston to bring resources for women (and men when necessary) on hot button issues such as breast cancer awareness, rape, drugs, pregnancy, etc.

We had an extensive conversation, and she asked me a lot of questions as to how I would facilitate certain events, programs, or what I would do if a situation arose where -blank-. She said she would make her decision by Friday, and I am hoping that it is me she picks to be her assistant. Please, wish me luck!

A dysfunctional family is exactly how I feel about the environment in the house we are living in. Of course, there’s nothing we can do about it, but it is still bothering me. The story goes a little something like this: I was a friend of this guy named John for four years. At first, him and I got along politically relatively well, but since then, I’ve changed a lot about how I view the world. I just don’t put up with oppression of any kind whatsoever, and he does. Him and I only have two things in common: sci-fi and movies. Other than that, we really don’t have much in common, but at the time, I was willing to overlook those things.

What made me change my mind about our relationship? Well, the truth is, is that I felt that he has had a total lack of respect for me since I’ve met him. There had been too many instances of him being a male shovenist, and at the time, I overlooked that; I considered it just a joke. The fact of the matter, is that it was never a joke. He really does not have the same respect for women, as let’s say, my husband does. I cannot be friends with someone who does not respect women as their equal. In other words, he disrespected me because I am a woman.

So what does this have to do with dysfunctional families? Well, Kris and I share a house with several other people including John. John let us know about the availability of the room and helped us to convince the landlord to have us rent the place, but since then, our relationship has been on the rocks. I do not intend for it to be mended at all. John has a lot of growing up to do, and there’s nothing that I can do to speed up his maturity. I know this sounds self-righteous, but trust me when I say this. In life, you learn that no matter how hard you want someone to understand and respect where you are coming from, that it won’t happen unless they let it happen, and with John, he ain’t letting it happen.

Now how in the hell did I get off track? Okay, back to the dysfunctional family. The reason I say that this house is a dysfunctional family, is because both John and Ralph (another neighboor) do not get along with the rest of the neighboors in the house, and it is becoming more and more apparent as the weeks go by. For example, John was supposed to give Harley (a fellow housemate) the new air-conditioner that our landlord designated to him, but instead, John took it for himself and installed his old air-conditioner into Harley’s room before Harley moved in. When Harley moved in, he had a crappy air-conditioner, and he was supposed to have a new air-conditioner. That’s only a mere taste of the selfishness that has been dished out by John against his fellow housemates. I could go on and on, but I’m not.

Eventually, I have to heal, and only time can do that. In time, I’ll forget about John because he has proven to me time and time again that he cannot be trusted as a friend. In time, Kris and I will have good jobs, and thanks to the cheap rent, we will be able to save up enough to buy some land, and eventually, buy our own home. In time, John will realize the error of his ways, and I won’t be around to coddle him like I used to. In time, I’ll be helping those less fortunate and won’t have time to think about the drama up in this house. But for now, I am left to deal with the drama . . . but blogging helps, and I thank God for that.

(October 15, 2005) At this point, I was starting to feel the uneasy feeling I’ve felt before when rich people ask me to do something and treat me like I’m a freaking house slave or something.

That was last week’s episode in a post titled The “Help”, where my employer tried to get me to do house work in addition to filing and organizing her paperwork has gone a lot better, at least, so it seems.

Yesterday, when I came into work at her home she said “April, are you hungry? Have you eaten lunch yet?” and I said “Oh, uh… no, I haven’t yet” and then she said “Okay, well lemme take you out to lunch then”. I was completely surprised. We had the most delicious Mexican food, … que sabroso!

Believe it or not, when we got back, after I noticed that her trash was full, I looked at her and politely asked “Would you like for me to take your trash out?” and she said “Oh, would you be so kind?” and I very happily went to it. Ain’t that a trip? I was so offended last week, and I then I got bought out by food. Oh well, I’m a sucker for good food and hospitality, what can I say?

In other news, I forgot to mention that this past Tuesday I received an email from the Women’s Resource Center here on campus stating that the graduate position there (there’s only one) was available because the last person resigned. Now know this: I’ve been wishing for that job since this past spring, but because I wasn’t a graduate student, I was not able to apply for the job.

I went ahead and polished up my resume to fit the job description, and then proceeded to give it to the lady in charge of the Women’s Center. I’m thinking that what I should do is go over there and help out a little bit, and then wait and see what she will do. It’s just a thought. I just need to find a non-profit close enough that I can volunteer for, and then stick with it until they are hiring. I turned in my resume to the United Way this past Monday, but they still haven’t called, and I seriously don’t think I’ll be getting that job… and I know it’s because my resume was lousy. The resume I worked on Tuesday was much better because I worked with the person in charge of job assistance at the graduate school of social work where I attend school.

Another hard part with the resume, is that I really have no job experience in non-profits . . . only volunteer experience. That makes it all the more difficult to get my foot in the door. It’s all good though, because eventually, I am required to take field practice at my school, and hopefully, maybe someone will hire me there.

As of lately, Kris and I have been extremely broke. Broke as in “no cash at all”, heh-heh. It’s all good though, because we’ve been poor so long, we know how to survive long periods of time with very little money. For example, ever since this summer, I’ve been making soup to get by; that is, there’s always soup in the fridge so that if we don’t have any money, we’ve always got some soup to eat. It’s easy to make, and if you’re interested in the recipe, you can download it and save it for a rainy day. The soup actually tastes delicious despite some of the crude ingredients. Eating soup is cheap, healthy, and a great way to lose a couple of extra pounds just in time for the holidays (you know, before you gain it all back again), lol.

Eating cheap is one thing, but what about entertainment. Okay, we got ourselves covered. One of our neighboors Jason (yeah, the one that two of our other neighboors were trying to kick out — another story), does magic tricks! I figured, why not share him with the world?!

Now here’s one of those posts I promised I wouldn’t post about, but here I go anyway. ((warning)) the following post is a T.M.I, i.e. “Too Much Information” entry.

When Kris and I met, I promised myself to God that I wouldn’t have sex with him unless we got married. Big lie. We had sex the second day we were together, heh. There goes the whole “waiting for the right time” sorta deal. I couldn’t help it, I knew I loved him right then and there, and there was just no way I wasn’t going to make love to him.

Anyhow, getting to the whole matter at hand with the bladder issue. Kris and I had sex so often, that I ended up getting a bladder infection because there were too many times that we had sex on the spur of the moment (in a car, on top of a washing machine, etc.) and Kris’s (ugh, you know…) wasn’t clean enough, and it ended up to where my (ugh, you know…) got infected. Experiencing a bladder infection is a horrible thing, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I’m not going to go into the details, but let me put it this way, I had to pee every five minutes even though nothing came out.

It’s been three years since the bladder infection I had (actually, I had two infections in a row), and my bladder still isn’t right. I mean, I don’t get bladder infections any more, because Kris is very careful about being clean, but I believe that my bladder will never be the same again. My grandmother told me about this one time, the whole idea that once you have more than one bladder infection, your bladder is never quite as good as it used to be.

After some advice from my mom’s best friend Val (the same one I stayed with during hurricane Rita), I decided to buy some cranberry pills, and have been taking them for the past couple of days in order to help me so that I don’t have to pee in the middle of the night. Let me put it this way, for the past couple of nights, I’ve been able to sleep through an entire night without having to get up to go to the restroom, and it’s a wonderful thing I tell ya.

In addition to this, I am able to be more intimate with Kris (which is always a plus). You see, um, I don’t know how to put this, but Kris has a . . . ugh, large carrot?! His size has always been an issue since we’ve been married, and often, it can be quite irritating or painful because of my bladder situation. Ever since I’ve been taking the cranberry pills though, I haven’t been scared of doing it for fear of the pain that immediately follows. Thank God!

I know I should go to the doctor, but right now Kris and I don’t have the money. I’m not dying or anything, just needed to take some cranberry pills. Kris said, “Babe, you should take them non-stop for like two months and see what that does”. Of course, my bladder still isn’t perfect (it’s not like I leak or something, it’s just sensitive), but I do feel much better. Just thought I’d share this with you all.

Something has been bothering me lately, and thanks to the fact that this weekend is relatively free for me, I can go ahead and say what’s on my mind. I’ve only been working at this little part time job for three days (this past Monday, Thurs. and Fri.), but already, I’ve got some issues.

The first day I had no problem, but it was the past two days that I’ve been feeling weird. This past Thursday, just before I was going to go home after work (mind you, I’m at this woman’s house being paid to organize her paperwork), her boyfriend came over with a very heavy large mirror and she looked at me and said “April, you don’t have any back problems do you?” I said, “No, why?” and then she replied “Oh, because I need for you to help my boyfriend lift this mirror to my room upstairs”. Mind you, I was getting ready to go home, and right before this happends, she asks this of me. At the time, I didn’t know the mirror was heavy, but when I came up to the back of her boyfriend’s SUV, I half ass lifted it, and it was super heavy. I looked at her and said “I’m afraid if I try, I might drop it and break your mirror” she said “Nonsense! I used to lift 300 pounds of glass when I was younger, but I can’t do it anymore now that I’m older (she’s 51). I looked at her and said “Seriously, I won’t be able to lift this” and her boyfriend looked at me and said “Sure you can”.

At this point, I was starting to feel the uneasy feeling I’ve felt before when rich people ask me to do something and treat me like I’m a freaking house slave or something. I kept on refusing to lift it, and she kept on making a face at me as if she was saying “how dare you not do what I tell you to do”. Honestly people, this mirror was really (and I mean really) heavy. Her boyfriend looked at me surprised that I couldn’t lift it, finally caved in, and lifted the entire thing by himself quite easily up the stairs to Jan’s room.

Next day is Friday, and right when I said “Okay, I’m heading home now”, she said “Oh April, before you go, could you (as she shoves the trash in my face) take out my trash for me, I’m just too tired to do anything (she hadn’t been doing shit all day…damn liar). I said “Ugh, Ohhh-kayy…” then she tells me “Oh, it’s right around the corner in the back” (it was way the hell in the back of the townhome community where she lives” and that made me very angry. I agreed, because my grandmother taught me not to make a fuss about the little things, and that they are only temporary, but I sware that the next time she tries to make me her “step n’ fetch it”, i.e. “the help”, I’m going to tell her in a nice polite manner “I’m sorry Jan, but I really need to get going”. If she asks me while I’m working with her files, I will very nicely say “Jan, why do you keep on asking me to do manual labor?”.

Alabama Desegregation Pioneer Dies

Vivian Malone Jones, the first African-American student to graduate from the University of Alabama, has died at age 63. Malone was one of the students Alabama Gov. George Wallace tried to block from entering the university in 1963.

I’m still trying to find another part time job that will pay more, but right now, a little chump change is exactly what Kris and I need right now. As I stated previously in hiatus, I get paid seven bucks an hour to help my colleague Jan organize her life. I introduced her to Microsoft OneNote for the MacOS, and she’s loving it. From the way it looks, it looks as if it’s going to be two months or so until we can get her house straightened out. She’s got tons of paperwork that she hasn’t looked through in years! Despite that she’s got a lot of papers that need to be filed, she has a unbelievably gorgeous townhome. I’ve never seen such a beautiful home in my entire life, and I plan to take pictures to show you exactly what I mean by the end of the week.

Moving on to the sports section! Kris and I went to our first NFL football game this past Sunday, and it was pretty kewl. Yeah, I don’t know much about football whatsoever, but at least I learned what first down meant ((yay)). I know, I’m a big dork, heh-heh. Going there, eating nachos and a coke, and being with Kris was the fun part; the Houston Texans losing pitifully to the Tennessee Titans was the disgusting part. Kris and I were rooting for Houston to win, but David Carr ended up making very conservative throws every time. We had a very low amount of passing yards as opposed to rushing yards. I tell ya, it was p-i-t-i-full.

But you know what? It was all good, because we got to see a live mariachi band because this past Sunday was Hispanic Hertitage Day. Here’s a little footage of it all.
