After two weeks of reading and watching the news over the Israeli-Lebanon (Palestinian) conflict, I am beginning to wonder where Israel gets their power to kill 300+ civilians and bomb the U.N. building in Lebanon. Is it our country that gives them the power? I suppose it might be; we are doing absolutely nothing to protect the lives of the civilians in Lebanon. In fact, President Bush perspective is that Hezbollah are terrorists and our congress also backed up Israeli military attacks against Lebanese. Well, let’s see . . . we’ve done the same thing in Iraq, so I could see why our government wouldn’t have a problem with Israel doing the same thing. If we did have a problem with Israel, then that action would not be in alignment with our previous actions of killing hundreds of innocent Iraqis every single day.
After reading several comments on my Iraeli-Lebanon post, I noticed some dissention over Hezbollah and whether or not they are terrorists within Lebanon and against Israel. Hezbollah, to my understanding, are not terrorists in Lebanon, because they hold 14 seats on Lebanon’s governmental council. So, are they terrorists to Israel? Well, it all depends on how we look at it. Israel has been stubborn to keep political power over land that is not theirs, and Hezbollah refuses to let them have it. They lead a pre-emptive strike against Israel and detained two Israeli soldiers. They struck first.
On the other hand, we cannot discount the fact that Israel is trying to maintain a hold over land that is not rightfully theirs. In that sense, they are terrorists of the Lebanese, and it is clearly shown by the fact that they have killed more civilians senselessly and deliberately bombed the U.N. embassy in Lebanon to prove they do not fear world repercussion.
Lebanon is a small country with very little political power; thus, it would appear that this war is a religious war and not a land war. If it was a land war, why not attack Syria or elsewhere in the Palestinian world? I think the Lebanese are an easy target, and honestly, like our country killing innocent civilians in Iraq, Israel should be ashamed of themselves for killing innocents as well. Hell, destroying paper factories and other civilian areas? Hardly an attack on a so-called “terrorist” group otherwise known as Hezbollah.
I think that both Hezbollah and the Israelis are doing the wrong thing, and civilians on the Lebanese side are suffering more than the Israelis because the Israelis are completely destroying southern Lebanon. No peace talks . . . nothing. Just like our country . . . one “terrorist” attack gives us the power to conquer Iraq. One “terrorist” attack on Israel gives them the power to conquer Lebanon.
Then again, shouldn’t Lebanon give up the Hezbollah terrorists and their Israeli captives? Ugh, when will the war end? War over power! I can’t wait for the day to come when power is not measured by death, but by compassion and understanding.
