    Well, you may already recall me blogging about my friend Amy a while back. But guess what? I convinced her to get a blog at wordpress.com. Her address is jessyni.wordpress.com. I also convinced my new friend Debbie to get a wordpress blog too, and her addy is at americancoolie.wordpress.com.

    Now, earlier today at the WRC, Deb looked at me and said “April, do you even know what a coolie is?” and I was like “um, no.” Erm, that was kind of embarrasing to say the least . . . especially when I found out what a coolie was. Here is an exerpt Source from wikipedia:

    Coolie
    (North America) a Chinese (originally used in 19th-century for Chinese railroad labor). Chinese Coolies have a long history and Chinese are still exploited Coolies. Also racial epithet for Indo-Caribbean people, especially in Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and South African Indians, where it is considered on par with “nigger”.

    I thought to myself “She is as crazy as me! I love it!” Nothing like meeting someone who is racial, gender, and class conscious as Debbie is. However, on this front I was quite ignorant (hence the embarassment). Normally, I’m the one who is versed in sociological lingo, and here I am (at work no less) ignorant of this racial slur against Asian Americans? I need to verse myself in racial slurs so I know better.

    Anyhow, today was their first time with blogs. I helped convert them into OUR minions. Fellow bloggers, shower them with comments. I’m quite excited about these blogs, because I know them in person, and TRUST you me . . . that these blogs are going to be worth your read. Show’em some luv.

    Haha, April, I’m your minion now? Thanks for the comment by the way, and I have no clue why people are so socially conscious and morally inept. The trend seems to be on the rise. Thanks for the racial slurs plug on wiki. I love wiki entries.

    P.S. Any news on the Martial Arts thing?

    wow…i’d never heard of that. I must REALLY be out of the racial slur loop. geez. i’ll be sure to go check out their blogs when i leave here. :)

    yeah… i’ve encountered a lot of these racial slurs.. which is why they bother me when people say them to each other without knowing what they mean… and for people who do say them to a certain group of people, they get confused not understanding why the other party is upset, etc.

    yep, i should say people need to be educated in these slurs and NOT use them!

    hmmm.. i guess i’ll hop over to your friends’ pages pretty soon! :)
